Washington Irving (1783 - 1859) was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. "Bracebridge Hall" is a location-based series of character sketches with a number of individual plots. The tales center on an English manor, its inhabitants, and the tales they tell.
